Long chains for coyote have been proven scientifically to be much more humane than short chains for coyote as the captured wild animal is provided some freedom vs being short chained causing the animal significant mental stress in addition to excessive injury from battling the short chained trap in a most unruly manner.

When a wild animal is restrained, the more intensely it is restrained, the more intensely it will battle for freedom, thus animals restrained with excessively short chains, example 12"chains, are prone to excess shoulder injuries as well as bone breakage.  It is a fallacy that the captured animal on a long chain will pound it's body from lunging, it will lunge initially upon capture which is why we use shock springs, once the animal fast realizes it is stuck, it will spend it's time windshield wiping the 1/4 of the catch "circle" on the side that it desires to escape to.  With long chains you generally do not have a catch circle and your set is generally much easier rebuilt, often guides still in place, even lure/bait/urine. It is also important to provide adequate swiveling on the chain as well as a proper shock spring.  Consider staking with a minimum 5' chain, bear in mind that when the FIC conducted trap tests that 8' chains were used, with drags, however many times the drags did not move thus the animal "staked" with an 8' chain and held very humanely as these same animals/traps passed in the tests. Also when short chain were used, it was dually noted, in a scientific manner, that such animals failed to pass such tests. One other plus, you will hold animals better with less stake in the ground on flat ground. Double stake if animal can climb to lift/pull-up stake.
